Sunday's Run (2 August 2009): Tynehead Regional Park

This Sunday's run is at Tynehead Regional Park. Meet at the parking lot just west of 168th St on 96th Ave. Early morning 7:30am start to beat the heat. Cool off and replenish at the nearby Esquire's.

Thanks to Jana for organizing this one!

Using your arms helps

Steven Collins, a biomechanical engineer at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands did some experiments showing that swinging your arms while walking helps. In fact, not moving your arms requires 12% more effort, which, according to the researcher, is equivalent to walking 20% faster or carrying a 10-kilo backpack.

Pay attention to your arm movement when you run -- it helps.

Remember we have a new time, a much earlier one (it's going to be a scorcher this weekend): 7:30am.

When we meet at Wendel's, we can decide our distance, then divvy up the trail to make it match.

No matter what distance you run, we can meet for coffee afterwards and plan our location for next Sunday's run.

The Fort-to-Fort Trail (Fort Langley)

Here's a map of the sections of the Fort-to-Fort Trail (view a larger size) that I've kept in my cookbook binder for years.

You can mix & match to create your own run of whatever length you'd like. For example, you could add any number of loops of the Houston Trail, or you could add 2K by running to the end of Glover Road to the Albion Ferry launch.

The Fort-to-Fort Trail is lined with native wildflowers, lush vegetation, and views of the Bedford Channel of the Fraser River. This mixed-use trail, popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists, links the first site of the Hudson's Bay fort in Derby Reach Park (GVRD) and the Fort Langley National Historic Site in Fort Langley.

Running along the river is a sweet change from road running. Enjoy!

Sunday's Run (19 July 2009)

Put on by Walnut Grove's Peninsula Runners, the Fort Langley Half Marathon takes place in and around the historic village, beginning and ending at the fort.

Looking at the half marathon route, you can see that the elevation on Armstrong isn't all that bad (at least it doesn't go on for too long). I'm grateful for all the hills we've been running over the past year.

It should be noted this course is challenging but very scenic. The main hill occurs at 8k on Armstrong road and rewards you with majestic views of Mt. Baker as you summit. The last 11k of the route is slightly rolling, downhill and flat and will reward those who pace themselves with a fast finish at the Fort.

If you're not up for running the race, maybe you'd be interested in running the Fort-to-Fort trail and add a loop or two of the Houston Trail. Afterwards, when we're all done, we can meet at Wendel's.

The race starts at 7:00am, so if all goes well, perhaps those of us in the Fort can meet around 9:30.

Anyone running in Fort Langley this coming Sunday?

Welcome to The Molasses Mile

Here's a place online where runners can meet to share information about one of our favourite past-times.

We're the kind of people who want to be running when we're old, so although we enjoy a good workout, we don't knock ourselves out.

We're slow and we're sweet. We're on The Molasses Mile.
